The Blessings of Godly Counsel
Read: Psalm 1:1-6
Christian Devotions Memory Verse
Blessed
is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth
in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful (Psalm
1:1 KJV)
The
advice that a man receives has a way of affecting his life. Some advice
brings life, while others bring death. Some advice brings prosperity,
while others may bring poverty. Some advice brings punishment while
others may bring praise. Some advice brings disgrace and shame, while
others may bring glory and honour. From our memory verse today, we can
also see that some advice brings blessings (Psalm 1:1), while curses may
follow anyone who receive an ungodly counsel. We need to be very
careful with the type of advice that we receive and practise.
If
the president of a nation chooses wrong advisers, it is very likely he
will make wrong decisions that will affect the life of his people and
cause them to rebel against him. That is what happened to King Rehoboam
when he rejected the counsel of the elders and accepted those of young
men who grew up with him (1King 12:1-17). If a wife in the house goes
ahead to seek the counsel of ungodly friends on issues affecting her
home, what do you think she will gets? Ungodly advice that could break
her home I guess.
It
is very important that we seek good and Godly counsel when taking
crucial decisions in life. Some advices are very good with good moral
concepts to them. As Christians, we need to examine if these advices are
also Godly as there is a little distinction between them.
So where do we get good and Godly counsel from? Who do we allow to advise us?
“With God are wisdom and might; he has counsel and understanding” (Job 12:13)
“I have counsel and sound wisdom; I have insight; I have strength” (Prov. 8:14)
God
has both wisdom and counsel. As a matter of fact, He is wiser than any
man. God knows the end from the beginning. He knows all things and He
can do all things. Our first point of call when facing any challenge
should be the word of God. From the word of God we can know the mind of
God concerning any issue affecting us. Before we take any decisions it
is expected of us to check if those decisions are contrary to the word
of God. But how do we know if a decision is in consonant or contrary to
the word of God when we don’t study the bible regularly? Obviously there
is no way except the Holy Spirit helps us. This is why we need to
familiarise ourselves with the word of God.
If
you need counsel to solve any puzzle of your life, come to Jesus and He
will help you. The bible described him as wonderful counsellor (Isaiah
9:6). Peter, one of his disciples, knows exactly who Jesus was when he
said “Lord you know all things” (John 21: 17). When King Nebuchadnezzar
was unable to solve the puzzle of his life, he called unto Daniel, a man
of God, who through the revelations from God gave the interpretation of
the King’s dream (Daniel 2:1-47). Brethren if you are faced with a
difficult challenges that you do not understand, talk to a genuine
minister of God and let him guide you. However, remember that every day
we face situations that require some level of decisions, on such we need
not call any man before taking them. The word of God that we know is
the only counsellor that can guide us in making those decisions without
erring. Be friends with the word of God today and let the Spirit of God
guide you.
From
our bible reading today we see that God has already pronounced
blessings upon everyone that receive and walk in his word (law).
Brethren, don’t take the word of God for granted anymore, begin
effective study of your bible today and start applying them to your
life. This is the only way we can overcome the challenges of life.
